Vitré is the best-preserved ‘old world’ town in Brittany.  It lies south of the Cherbourg peninsula and 22 miles east of Rennes, close to the eastern border of Brittany with Normandy. The old town is built on a spur commanding the deep valley of the river Vilaine.  The well preserved castle with shining pepper-pot turrets stands on the edge of the cliff. Much restored, its oldest parts date back to the 13th century.  In the old town are many half-timbered houses, making a stroll in the bustling pedestrian streets very enjoyable.

From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Vitré prospered by making hemp and woollen cloth and cotton stockings.  Now its industries include knitting mills, shoe manufacture, a large abattoir and tanneries, and its population is around 16,500.  The town has a Monday market and all kinds of community facilities serving the wider hinterland.

The surrounding countryside is mixed agricultural land, with interesting towns and villages in easy reach.  Mont St Michel, Dinan and Dinard can be reached for day trips, while the town is a good stopping point en route for central and southern France.

Exchange visits to  Vitré

Our twinning link with Vitré dates back to 1981.  LITA members visit Vitré to stay with our host families and welcome them to stay with us in Lymington in alternate years.  We go to Vitré in even number years; and they visit us in odd number years. We mostly travel together by coach usually using the Portmouth-Caen or Portsmouth-St Malo crossings. In 2018 we flew to Rennes. Some members travel independently to extend their stay in France.
