Vitré Twinners visit to Lymington
|
This year, our French visitors decided on a day in London before arriving for their four day stay in Lymington. Fifty three of them were greeted enthusiastically by their host families. They had had an excellent day, having had the unexpected pleasure of seeing the Queen on her way to the State Opening of Parliament.
The following morning was spent relaxing and catching up on family news as many of the guests had known their hosts for some time and had become friends after several exchange visits.
For their first outing, the group was offered an afternoon travelling by car to Bolderwood. The weather was rather dismal, damp and cold, but a hardy band made their way into the forest for an afternoon of rounders, deer watching and a nature quiz, followed by a walk and ending up with a shared picnic, which included delicious cakes and scones. Some hosts had chosen to take their visitors to other destinations such as Kingston Lacey and Exbury Gardens.
A day at Bucklers Hard was next on the agenda, visiting the impressive Maritime Museum and village grounds. Luckily the weather was much improved, which enabled everyone to enjoy their day. A picnic had been provided by the host families and the day was rounded off with a very pleasant boat trip down the Beaulieu river.
Everyone gathered in the evening for a farewell buffet supper at Boldre Memorial Hall, which was thoroughly enjoyed. The entertainment was supplied by Jim and Fiona, with Jim playing his accordion in French café style during the meal. When they had finished, Jim encouraged everyone to get up on their feet for dancing to some lively Scottish tunes.
Sadly, the next day heralded the departure of our French friends, back home by ferry via Portsmouth but we are all looking forward to our return visit to Vitre next year.
