Almansa in the province of Albacete lies an hour’s drive north west of Alicante, and was once the Moorish town of Al-Manxa. As a frontier town between the Moors and the Christians, it has a medieval castle on a steep limestone crag rising out of the Castilian plain. Around this lies the picturesque old town.
Modern Almansa has a population of 25,000 and its industries include shoe-making, a guitar factory and a bodega producing a high quality, but reasonably priced local (Denominacion de Origen) wine. The town is situated on the southern Meseta, a high arid tableland where cereals, saffron, olives and vines are grown. The surrounding countryside is undulating with fields of crops, and not far away is spectacular limestone scenery with caves and gorges. Almansa is a bustling community with good facilities including a market, theatre, cinema, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, various sports clubs and good shops. It has a Fiesta in spring and a Feria in late summer, both lasting about a week. These are particularly exciting times to visit the town. Exchange visits to AlmansaOur twinning link with Almansa dates back to 1993. We travel together, flying from Heathrow or Gatwick to Alicante and travel on from there by coach.
