Lymington Twinners trip to Vitré
April 2018

Visit to Vitré April 2018 For the first time, the majority of us decided to travel by air from Southampton to Rennes. We had hired a coach from the firm Le Pape for the transfer to and from Vitré, and for the day out. We arrived in Vitré on Saturday, 21st April 2018 by 4 pm to be greeted by our hosts and whisked off for the evening. That weekend was a special one for our host town, not just because of our visit, with organised events in the town, mostly active, and there was a general air of festivity. Sunday was spent with our hosts. Many of the group ate in the restaurants in Vitré or were taken out for the day. There was an option to run or to walk 12, 8 or 4 kms for the more active. A few of us decided to take the shorter walks and it was a chance to see the surrounding countryside on foot. The walk was guided and extremely well organised. Anne Rupin and Valérie Souvestre (see photo top right) from the Jumelage leadership accompanied us for the day out on the Monday, a trip to Cancale: all the LITA members joined this excursion. Most opted to visit the oyster farm and visitor displays at La Ferme Marine where we discovered just how complicated and what hard work it is to produce these delicious molluscs. The oyster-tasting was fun and very attractively presented. (photo right). There was also a museum showing an enormous array of beautiful shells. (photo right) After our picnic, the coach then took us on into Cancale. This is a beautiful port with amazing views and it was possible to see Mont St Michel in the distance on the other side of the vast bay. There were some lovely walks along the cliff tops (photo right) and many of us took the chance to visit of the little shops and cafés. On returning to Vitré we had a quick turnaround for an evening buffet at La Grenouillère. We were entertained in the garden by a choir (who are keen to form a link with a Lymington or New Forest Choir). We had a lively evening, with French and English being spoken in equal measure. Another quick flight of 45 minutes brought us home on Tuesday the 24th, and we managed to return without any problems from threatened strikes. A short, but very entertaining weekend. The weather was unseasonably warm and dry, so we were very lucky. Our grateful thanks to our hosts for such a pleasurable and well organised trip. |
