UK and EU TOWN TWINNING RESOURCES
New Forest Twinners (NFT) is an informal grouping of town twinning associations within the New Forest District local government area, The NFT meet to exchange ideas and advice; support new (or struggling) twinning associations; and to arrange public liability insurance. Sheila Ward who is the Convenor of New Forest Twinners may be contacted from the LITA contact form The Local Government International Bureau (LGIB) was responsible for town twinning within the UK until January 2007 when it became a part of the Local Government Association European and International Unit. The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is the EU body that sees twinning as a vital means of bringing Europe's citizens together across national frontiers, to help build a peaceful united Europe with grassroots support. Today, there are nearly 30,000 twinning links. CEMR works closely with the Commission (DG Education and Culture) which promotes modern, high quality twinning initiatives and exchanges that involve all sections of the community. European Commission grants for twinning are currently within the "Europe for Citizens" Programme 2007 to 2013 (Action 1) "Take Your Partners" (Published by LGIB 13 February 2006) is the local authority handbook on international partnerships and a guide to town twinning. It gives practical advice for local authorities and twinning associations on setting up and managing a formal town twinning link or a project based around an international partnership. |
